In March, Myra Butler, still confined to her couch in her upstairs room, remembers the July eleven years earlier when workers were harvesting wheat. She recalls how Indian raiders kidnapped Johnny as he made a bark playhouse under a hickory tree.
Aunt Kate interrupts Myra's sad memories to announce that Parson Elder is paying a pastoral call. Kate believes that Parson Elder is the person most responsible for Johnny's return, and she tells the parson that he must help restore Myra's low spirits in the face of Johnny's poor behavior. Myra winces at Kate's angry accusations against True Son. To keep peace in the family, the parson agrees to talk with the boy.
After True Son joins the trio in Myra's room, he dismays his mother and the parson by sitting on the floor and refusing hospitality.
He concludes that the parson wants him to undergo Christian baptism. The parson admits that he seeks to improve the boy's behavior, to which True Son replies that his behavior is morally ethical by Indian standards: He honors Cuyloga and Quaquenga and doesn't swear.
The parson admits that white people are often less than moral. As the discussion between True Son and the parson becomes more confrontational, the boy identifies the parson as Colonel Elder, captain of the Peshtanks, who slaughtered the Conestogo.
The parson rationalizes the attack as a local peacekeeping measure against the perceived threat of hostile Indians. After the boy departs, the parson consoles the mother by commenting that True Son was brought up by an above-average savage and is now acquiring white traits and behaviors.
The parson hopes that agricultural field work and a future attraction to a white girl may help settle the boy into the white way of life. Richter presents the complex human drama from alternate points of view. Myra Butler's chronic illness is a paradox, a contradiction between an emotional illness and its physical effects, caused by the poignant loss of a child and — ironically — worsened by his return.
Nathalie's health deteriorates as she writes a letter causing Gabriel to become concerned. According to her in " Stormy Weather 2 ", Nathalie admits having deep admiration for Gabriel and knows that it has presumably morphed into romantic feelings. In "Reflekdoll", after their failure with Reflekta, she reminded him that they're stronger together in their following attempts, which resulted to be true.
Despite her devotion, in "Ladybug", she disregarded his orders and concocted her own plan for getting the heroes' Miraculous, aware of Gabriel's desperation. But when she was told that her time as Mayura was over, Nathalie accepted that and knew he could call on her at any time.
Nathalie is usually serious around Adrien, not being very warm or close to him though she is his current main caretaker. Despite this, she does care for him, which she shows when she requests to Gabriel that Adrien be allowed to go to school after seeing how much he wanted to attend. In "Santa Claws", she sees how sad he is about his father not celebrating Christmas and asks Gabriel to spend time with his son. She even softly smiles at Adrien's joy at his friends being allowed into the mansion on Christmas.
She showed concern for him when Gabriel took a big risk in "Style Queen". In " Stormy Weather 2 ", Nathalie claims to have developed a great sense of affection for Adrien as she watched him grow up.
Nathalie is unaware that Adrien is Cat Noir. However, she despises the hero and wants to help Gabriel take his Miraculous from him, even telling Hawk Moth that she'll go to any lengths to end his reign. However, in "Startrain", she expressed hope that the hero would rescue Adrien when he and his class were blasted into space. In an alternate future, Nathalie had been horrified when she learned of Cat Noir's secret identity. Nathalie uses him to transform into Mayura. While their relationship hasn't been much explored, it is clear that Duusu enjoys the chaos his owner causes possibly for his moody personality and cares for her, as he gets upset when Nathalie collapses after using the Peacock Miraculous in " Reflekdoll ".
As for Nathalie, she doesn't seem to heed Duusu's advice in " Ladybug ", preferring to transform and create the ultimate sentimonster. While their relationship hasn't been much explored, it is stated in "Stormy Weather 2" that Nathalie is deeply affected by Emilie's coma, becoming more saddened for her as time passes.
Nathalie has seldom encountered Marinette personally, only seeing her in person during the derby hat competition in " Mr. Pigeon " and briefly interacting with her in " Style Queen ".
On Adrien's birthday in " The Bubbler ", she treats Marinette formally when on a speaker, but disregards her by claiming to Adrien that Marinette's gift was from Gabriel. Nathalie is unaware that Marinette is Ladybug. However, she despises the heroine and wishes to help Gabriel take her Miraculous, even telling Hawk Moth that she'll go to any lengths to end her reign.
However, in "Startrain", she expressed hope that the heroine would rescue Adrien when he and his class were blasted into space. In an alternate future, Nathalie was willing to go along with Gabriel's plan to force Marinette to break up with Adrien so she would be vulnerable to akumatisation, despite the obvious and utter heartbreak this caused the poor girl.

He says that this is what causes Indians to hate white people and that unless they want him to hate them he should not accept the drink.
In response to this statement, Parson Elder says that True Son is probably right about some white settlers and that he, too, does not believe it to be a good practice.
True Son denies swearing to his parents and says that he always treats his parents with respect. Aunt Kate points out that he is talking about his white baby-killing Indians parents, at which point True Son gets very upset.
He says that Indians do not kill white children but the Paxton boys did kill Conestoga Indians; Parson Elder was one of their leaders. At the mention of the Paxton boys' massacre, Parson Elder's face becomes visibly strained.
Throughout the conversation he has tried to remain calm and reserved; now, however, he sadly states with a feeling of great regret that even the best Christians can sometimes act badly. When True Son asks the Parson if he acted badly as well, the Parson states that he did what he could to stop the massacre, but the men threatened to kill his favorite horse if he did not go along with their plans.
He says that despite what True Son may think, there are many true accounts of white children who have been murdered by Indians. Even though True Son denies this passionately, the Parson does not press the subject any longer. He talks a little more to True Son but does not ask him any more questions. When True Son leaves the three adults alone, Parson Elder tells the women that True Son's case is difficult since he has been raised with Indians for so long.
However, he points out that True Son has already started to change despite his efforts to remain Indian; True Son's English is better and his composure is less like that of an Indian. Parson Elder says that the only thing they can do is be patient with the boy and wait for him to accept white culture on his own terms. The boy is sick with an unknown fever that Dr. Childsley, the town physician, cannot diagnose. Childsley says that very little is known about what causes Indians to become sick.
Although they have the same internal organs as whites, the Indians seem to be more susceptible to sickness. He believes that this is due to the heathen, backward, and superstitious nature of the Indian race, and he thinks that True Son's illness has something to do with his long captivity.
